Ancient Stageira

Hometown of Aristotle. Ancient Stageira is close to the coast, 10klm to the east of the newer (current) mountainous settlement of Stageira. The ancient town of Stageira, where Aristotle was born, was destroyed by Philip II of Macedon but was reconstructed by Alexander the Great in his master’s honor. This ancient town is next to the modern settlement of Olympiada and constitutes an archaeological site that can be visited.
