Chalkidiki
Located in Central Macedonia, is well known for its breath-taking landscapes and its large and beautiful beaches running down to crystal clear blue seas. The birth place of Aristotle, the father of science and teacher of Alexander the Great!
The enchanting peninsula of Chalkidiki, reminiscent of Poseidon’s trident, is located south of Thessaloniki and consists of three smaller peninsulas; Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. The capital of Chalkidiki, Poligiros, can be reached by road, while the nearest airport is the “Thessaloniki International Airport – Macedonia”.
*Chalikidiki is a region in Macedonia and geographically constitutes the extremity of Central Macedonia in the Aegean Sea, which penetrates deeply in it forming three elongated peninsulas, which give the region its characteristic shape (“the legs of Chalkidiki”). To the northeast there is the peninsula of Marmari, between the Akanthio and Strymonikos bay.
Chalkidiki is a large peninsula as it is surrounded by the Aegean Sea and only to the northwest it is united with the land of Macedonia through the region of Thessaloniki. In the southern part of Chalkidiki, three characteristic elongated peninsulas are formed, which are the following from west to east: the peninsula of Kassandra, the peninsula of Sithonia and the peninsula of Athos.
The capital of the regional unit of Chalkidiki is Polygyros with 6.121 residents. The administrative center of Mount Athos is Karyes. The peninsula of Chalidiki is divided administratively by the regional unit of Chalkidiki and the Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain. The northern part of the peninsula belongs to the county of Thessaloniki.
Geography
Chalkidiki consists of three smaller peninsulas (and one minor in the east):
- Pallini or Kassandria or Flegra, known today as Peninsula of Kassandra
- Sithonia or Logkos, the current homonym peninsula.
- Athos or Akti, the current homonym peninsula of Athos, where the Holy Mountain is found.
The Holy Mountain constitutes a self-managed part of the Greek State, which is found in the Peninsula of Athos in Chalkidiki, Macedonia. It consists of twenty Holy Monasteries as well as other monastic institutes, and unofficially it is characterized as “Autonomous Monastic State”. It constitutes the center of the Orthodox Christian monastic life with monuments of great national, historical, religious, literary and cultural value at a global scale. From 1988 it is considered one of the World Heritage Cultural Monuments.
- Marmaris (known as Mprostomnitsa) in the east, constitutes the peninsula which separates Akanthio from Strymonikos Bay.
Geology
Chalkidiki is a geologically and mineral rich region as the rocks and metals that compose its land give to its residents a magnificent material for them to construct and support their financial activity. The visitor can have a “mining” tour in Chalkidiki, through specific geo-paths where the traces of mining activity from the recent past are evidenced. The visitor can discover the characteristic attributes of its rich subsoil [9].
